Fashion designer Marjut Uotila is FCINY's artist-in-residency for the month of September 2017. Uotila is the founder and head designer of the avant-garde menswear label DUSTY, founded in 2002. The collections, designed and produced locally in Finland, include pieces with experimental silhouettes and exquisite details finished by hand. In her designs, Uotila mainly uses natural fabrics and fibers, in order to produce environmentally-friendly garments as well as to enhance their wearability.

Marjut Uotila aims to challenge and reshape the traditional menswear design by creating something unique and unprecedented. She often combines contemporary handicraft techniques with elements of traditional clothing in an unexpected way. Three-dimensional textures such as knitted and braided fabrics are part of the signature style of DUSTY.

DUSTY's collections have attracted attention among international fashion professionals. Currently the brand's biggest markets are in Japan and in the United States. Recently the designs have been featured also in movies such as ‘The Hunger Games’.

During her residency period in New York Uotila attemps to strengthen and further develop existing collaborations, seek for new opportunities and deepen DUSTY’s foothold in the American fashion scene. DUSTY’s SS18 collection will be displayed for buyers and press at the We Shall Run Agency's showroom during the New York Fashion Week in September.
