“I am really excited to join the Institute. For me it is essential to work in an environment that is challenging, multidisciplinary, and constantly in dialogue with other creators, viewers, and listeners. Coming from a small Icelandic community in British Columbia, I grew up being presented with a specific form of Nordic culture - one steeped in tradition and really strict discourses of authenticity. The FCINY challenges static cultures: It is constantly in dialogue, forward thinking, and really examining relevant issues like climate justice, sustainability, and circular economies through design and art. As Development Director, that's what I want to help build.”

Cameron is widely experienced in development and fundraising at nonprofit organizations. She holds a BA in Women’s and Gender Studies and English Literature from Concordia University and an MA in Women’s and Gender Studies from The University of British Columbia. In New York City, Cameron has worked alongside local and international organizations tackling issues including gender equity, leadership development gaps, and online harassment. Alongside the arts, especially close to her heart are questions about our environment.

“I am excited about the launch of Crossroads - New Views on Art and Environment, published by the FCINY and the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of The Arts Helsinki. While the whole book is so interesting, I’m fascinated by the work of the artist collective Honkasalo-Niemi-Virtanen. Their work Chimera feels like a kind of magical realism, with the viewers reimagining the integrity of our bodies and being forced to see every thread holding these human-made devices together.”

Cameron joins FCINY right at the eve of the institute’s 30 year anniversary in 2020. “The upcoming anniversary is a significant opportunity for the Institute to grow. We've been around for 30 years, and in that time have created and supported engaging work. Now's this pivotal point where we're bringing in people in a new way and keep on making projects that really make a difference.”
